ZSM-48 for Lube Oil Dewaxing

ZSM-48 is effectively used in lube oil dewaxing due to its unique one-dimensional 10-membered ring pore system (MTT topology, same as ZSM-23) that enables shape-selective catalysis. In this application, ZSM-48 selectively isomerizes long-chain normal paraffins (waxes) present in lubricant base oils into branched isomers, which significantly lowers the pour point while preserving high viscosity index and yield—critical for high-performance lubricants.
Key advantages of ZSM-48 in dewaxing include:
  • Controlled pore size (~5.3 Å): Allows entry of linear alkanes but restricts bulky molecules, minimizing cracking.
  • Moderate acidity: Especially when synthesized with high Si/Al ratios, it favors isomerization over excessive cracking.
  • Bifunctional catalysis: When loaded with noble metals (e.g., Pt or Pd), it enables efficient hydroisomerization under hydrogen atmosphere, reducing coke formation and enhancing catalyst stability.
Compared to ZSM-23, ZSM-48 often exhibits slightly different crystal morphology and acid site distribution, which can be tuned for optimal selectivity in industrial dewaxing processes such as catalytic dewaxing or hydrodewaxing
